No judgement. Just connection.

Yeah Nah is an Australian slang phrase that essentially means "no".

Question: "Hey mate, how are you feeling?"

Response: "Yeah, nah".

Yeah Nah Mental Health for Men is a non-judgmental, no sign up and no pressure way for men to connect and feel better about their wellbeing and mental health. We are based in the Bayside Melbourne area.

About Yeah Nah

Yeah Nah Mental Health for Men is a non-profit, community association focused on connection for wellbeing and mental health.

It's the typical Australian expression, answering a tough question like "How are you?" with a nondescript response. Too many men are wired with the old school attitude of "suck it up", "toughen up" or "push through" when it comes to dealing with a problem or issue. Rather than having an open conversation or asking for help, men are often inclined to internalise tricky situations. We are losing men at a rapid rate (with over 3000 lives lost to suicide each year, approximately 75% are men - that's a staggering 2250 lives lost - source: https://lifeinmind.org.au).

Men are good at talking about sports, cars, the wonders of Bunnings shopping, but not themselves and not about things that matter to families, friends and loved ones. Let's change that narrative and those appalling statistics, and help keep fathers, brothers and sons mentally healthy.

Our Mission

Yeah Nah Mental Health for Men is about connections. Taking part is simple - meet outside Merrymen Cafe, 2 Small Street Hampton 3188, on the first Sunday of every month at 7:30am.

From there, we'll grab a coffee and take a walk towards Hampton beach. There's no script, no pressure, and no judgement.

How you wish to connect is up to you. If you wish to grab a drink and walk in silence, perfect. If you want to chat about the footy or something else, also perfect.

Some Mental Health programs for men are complicated, some even charge you to attend. If there's one or one hundred in attendance on the first Sunday of the month, that's a conversation or connection gained.

It could also be an opportunity to commemorate or remember a loved one.

Founder

I'm Matt, a Bayside local who enjoys being active in the local community. I have spent a fair amount of time in the "inner sanctum" of men's sporting clubs. I have seen the way men communicate and the pressure they often place on themselves to internalise a problem or challenge they are facing. I'm certainly not an expert, but as a father, brother and son I am extremely concerned about the current state of men's mental health.

Adding to this concern, is the significant number of men I know, as friends, colleagues or who I have played sport with, who contribute to the terrible statistics around men's mental health.

For me, there was a gap in the community for men to connect informally in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. As a result, the concept of Yeah Nah Mental Health for Men was created.

If Yeah Nah helps even just one person connect, who otherwise had nowhere to go, that's a win for me.

I hope to see you on the first Sunday of the month sometime!

Cheers, Matt
